   That statement about sums up my experience on message forums from 2001 through 2007. All these people tossing out contemporary anime and video game references mixed in amongst less contemporary references to dead philosophers with no explanation for anything, but also being too cool to laugh, so I couldn’t tell even what was supposed to be funny. On this occasion I thought, if it was potentially funny, it would be compromised through my explanation, and I ended up writing a considerable amount of follow up material based on my annoyance with the behavior I was emulating.

   In brief, I am comparing the antagonist from a recent science fiction film with the protagonist of a less recent number-throwing video game, both of which have acquired reputations for being moody.
